Capturing Wedding Day Emotions

Creatively capturing a full range of emotions on each wedding day is always one of my main aims.  A photo can have all the aesthetic elements spot on but if it’s lacking in emotion it will still look flat.  Whether it’s documenting the funny and playful moments, the tears of joy or those looks of deep love and connection – they are all very personal and precious moments for each couple.  The big emotional moments that happen when everyone is watching and those small fleeting interactions that go easily unnoticed, both are important to document.  I actively look for these moments to shoot; I listen to conversations so I know when punchlines of jokes are coming, I preempt the emotional meetings of family members just about to see each other for the first time is ages, I can almost guarantee at least one guest will accidently throw confetti in someone’s eye or mouth at each wedding and I know the speeches usually set people off crying… or laughing… or both if they are really good!  Children always wear their emotions loudly and proudly (especially at a long event like a wedding) and adding some alcohol to adult guests escalates their emotional responses which results in some pretty amusing images too.  Each of these moments must be captured discreetly and with respect, a wedding is such a personal celebration and every photographer must fully understand that but it’s the series of emotional moments that tell the story of a wedding day and that is why I’m so focussed on capturing them for each couple.
